OUR HISTORY
On Monday January 16, 2012, a group of twenty people came together to discuss a vision of ministry that was in the heart of Pastor Cory J. Chavis. The vision was simple, introduce the unsaved to Jesus, become a place of refuge for the lost, and serve the community. The group prayed and together agreed the time was now to come run with this vision and focus on Kingdom Building. It was at that meeting that Victory Community Church was birthed and organized with Pastor Chavis being confirmed as the Founder and Senior Pastor.
Victory Community Church, had its official First Service on Sunday January 22, 2012 at 11am in the basement of Don Bosco Hall located at 19321 W Chicago Street on the Westside of Detroit. Our start was very humble with a two legged wooden lectern and milk crates used as pulpit furniture while our members sat on plastic folding chairs. Although the scene was humble, the Spirit was high and God showed up. Our ministry immediately grew in size and by March 2012 we out grew the basement and moved to main floor gymnasium of Don Bosco.
While at Don Bosco, several of our primary ministry initiatives were started including our first bicycle giveaway as well as our first “Pay Your Bills” Service on Easter Sunday of 2012. That Sunday the Detroit News showed up and featured us in the lifestyle section of the Sunday Easter Edition. They were shocked that a new ministry would be so bold and committed to helping others.
In April 2013 we were blessed to move to 18340 West Seven Mile Road in Detroit. The Lord continued to bless us and we developed multiple new ministries on Seven Mile including our Children’s Church and Teen Ministry. Our facility sat approximately 180 people and allowed us to expand to support various community projects. We also developed new initiatives such as our 100 Backpack Giveaway and our Annual Victory in the Community Weekend where we provide free food, have fun for all ages, and provide resources to the community.
Although we were happy with our home, we continued to believe God that greater was coming. Our prayer was fundamental, we want to do more, we want to reach more, we want to leave an impact on our city, Lord we need greater capacity to reach the masses. The Lord answered that prayer and on Sunday August 6, 2017 we moved to our current house of worship located at 14025 Hubbell at the corner of Hubbell and Grand River in Detroit. We are now blessed with an over 300 seat facility, baptismal pool, and seven classrooms as well as a fellowship hall and commercial size kitchen.
We currently stand at over 400 Members and over 40 Active Ministries. We are committed to community outreach, and the love of all people. We believe in reaching every person where they are, regardless of their background or past. Our simple desire is to love like Jesus and work to fulfill our destiny of being his disciples. On a daily basis we challenge all to follow our mission of saving souls, cementing saints, saturating the city, and serving the community. We still believe that what’s coming is better than what has been.
